The Essential Rumi: Selected Spiritual Thoughts

The Essential Rumi is a collection of spiritual and mystical poems that enlightens its readers about the beauty of being true to one’s faith in God; no matter what their religion is.

Moreover, reading this was entirely mind-boggling that it gives you that profound and all different kinds of emotions while getting lost in the written words of Rumi.

And for the reason that it was so touchingly beautiful to read that I’ve decided to post it in my blog those highlighted thoughts that I’ve noted while I was reading this.

“La’illaha il’Allahu (“There’s no reality but God; there is only God”)”

“Our gratitude to God holds them to us, and brings more besides.”

“God blesses both and all in the line, and replaces what has been consumed, and provides for those who work the soil of helpfulness, and blesses Muhammad and Jesus and every other messenger and prophet. Amen, and may the Lord of all created beings bless you.”

“Whoever acts with respect will get respect. Whoever brings sweetness will be served almond cake. Good women are drawn to be with good men.”

“The foundation and the walls of the spiritual life are made of self-denials and disciplines. Stay with friends who support you in these. Talk with them about sacred texts, and how you’re doing, and how they’re doing, and keep your practices together.”

“A True Person is more calm and deliberate. He or she doesn’t worry about interruptions.”

“Don’t go to sleep one night. What you most want will come to you then. Warmed by a sun inside, you’ll see wonders. Tonight, don’t put your head down. Be tough, and strength will come. That which adoration adores appears at night. Those asleep may miss it. One night Moses stayed awake and asked, and saw a light in a tree.”

“There is a way that leads from all-colors to colorlessness. Know that the magnificent variety of the clouds and the weather comes from the total simplicity of the sun and the moon.”

“Humble living does not diminish. It fills. Going back to a simpler self gives wisdom.”

“Miracles don’t cause faith, but rather the scent of kindredness that unites people. Miracles overwhelm unbelief. Faith grows from friendship.”

“May God cause you to change your life in the way you know you should.”

“There are no rules for worship. Say whatever and however your loving tells you to. Your sweet blasphemy is the truest devotion. Through you a whole world is freed. Loosen your tongue and don’t worry what comes out. It’s all the light of the spirit.”

“Love is a quality of God. Fear is an attribute of those who think they serve God”

“The way you make love is the way God will be with you.”

“When you’re traveling, ask a traveler for advice, not someone whose lameness keeps him in one place.”

“Love of one’s country is part of the faith.” But don’t take that literally! Your real “country” is where you’re heading, not where you are. Don’t misread that hadith.”

“Do not believe an absurdity, no matter who says it.”

“Do not grieve over what is past. It’s over. Never regret what has happened.”

“Don’t give advice to someone who’s groggy and falling asleep.”

“Any love based on physical beauty is not love.”

“This world is a mountain. What we do is a shout. The echo comes back to us.”

“I go into the Muslim mosque and the Jewish synagogue and the Christian church and I see one altar.” And he made it clear in other places that someone who considers religion or nation an important human category is in danger of severing the heart from its ability to act compassionately. This is a radical idea now, but Rumi held the conviction in the thirteenth century with such deep gentleness that its truth was recognized.”

“If you are rich and full-fed, don’t laugh at the impulsiveness of the poor. They were not acting from their souls, but they were acting out of some necessity.”

“Meditation, or any solitary practice (a walk before dawn, a poem every morning, sitting on the roof at sunset), gives depth and expands the soul’s action.”

“Anything you do every day can open into the deepest spiritual place, which is freedom.”

“Love has no calculating in it. That’s why it’s said to be a quality of God and not of human beings. “God loves you” is the only possible sentence. The subject becomes the object so totally that it can’t be turned around. Who will the “you” pronoun stand for, if you say, “You love God”?”

I’am so small I can barely be seen. How can this great love be inside me? Look at your eyes. They are small, but they see enormous things.”

“Whoever finds love beneath hurt and grief disappears into emptiness with a thousand new disguises.”

“Be relentless in your looking, because you are the one you seek.”

“Your deepest desire for a window should be as an open empty place through which to hear the call to prayer.”

“Traveler, don’t try to decide where to stop. Whatever you are attracted to, you weary of. From being a sperm cell to a young man to an old man, notice the changes. Stay light on your feet and keep moving. Speak any language, Turkish, Greek, Persian, Arabic, but always speak with love.”

“Tenderness is not always appropriate. Sometimes, there must be a sudden turning away.”

“Love is the vital core of the soul, and of all you see, only love is infinite.”

“Don’t judge those who are beyond judgment. Don’t speak of anything you haven’t experienced.”

“The taste of today is not that of yesterday.”

“Reason and patience like well-meaning uncles come to rail about how difficult this world is. Love helps you see into the invisible. Water washes your hands. Earth sits quiet like a childhood friend.”

“All beauty is God’s beauty.”

“I tell everything, but I do not say it, because my friend, it is better your secret be spoken by you.”

“The puppet show looks charming, but go behind the screen and watch who runs it.”

“Let your prayer be pure praise, not begging for something to happen, or not happen.”

“Giving to charity and giving up jealousy are ways to say how it is inside us.”

“Any time you exert yourself by going somewhere, giving money, or taking time to pray, you are saying, There is a priceless jewel inside me. Fasting says, I have not eaten even what is permitted. I must want no connection to what is not. Giving to the poor says, I am distributing my own property. Certainly, I will not steal from others.”

“On every trip, have only one objective, to meet those who are friends inside the presence.

If you stay home, keep the same purpose, to meet the innermost presence as it lives in people.”

“Pay attention to those who want to change so badly they cry and dissolve into loving kindness and freedom.”

“Good people find each other. Honor your friends and watch what happens.”

“Sometimes, though, it is fear that brings you to the presence.”

“There is one sure way to know a hypocrite. Listen to how he speaks, the quality of the voice and his peculiar enunciation will reveal more about him than his face or physique.”

“Quit pretending to be clear. That pretense keeps you from receiving what I can give.”

“Raise your words, not voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder.”

Manuscript Found in Accra by Paulo Coelho: 18 Selected Inspiring Thoughts.

For this blog post of mine, I’m going to share with you those quotes that I’ve highlighted while I was reading Paulo Coelho’s Manuscript Found in Accra.

In which by the way, I’m also grateful that I’ve read this at the right time when I needed such inspiring and profound thoughts to help me feel calm and at ease. For such insights shared in this book about everything in life gave me such strength to overcome my fears and to be more braver and more positive all throughout. To keep the faith and believe that it’s going to be okay.

So here are the following quotes:

  1. “Learn three important things: Wait patiently for the right moment to act. Do not let the next opportunity slip by you. And take pride in your scars.”

  2. “In the cycle of nature there is no such thing as victory or defeat; there is only movement.”

  3. “They listen to the beating of their own heart. They’re aware of being tense, of being afraid. They consider their life and discover that, despite the fear, their faith is still alive in their soul, driving them onward.”

  4. “Expect nothing and you won’t be disappointed.”

  5. “Solitude is not the absence of love, but its complement.”

  6. “In cases of unrequited love, there is always the hope that one day it will be requited.”

  7. “Don’t try to be useful. Try to be yourself; that is enough, and that makes all the difference.”

  8. “Do one thing: Live the life you always wanted to live. Avoid criticizing others and concentrate on fulfilling your dreams. This may not seem very important to you, but God, who sees all, knows that the example you give is helping Him to improve the world. And each day, He will bestow more blessings upon it.”

  9. “May I be capable of accepting myself as I am: a person who walks and feels and talks like anyone else, but who, despite his faults, is also brave.”

  10. “No matter how you are feeling, get up every morning and prepare to let your light shine forth.”

  11. “Elegance is not an outer quality, but a part of the soul that is visible to others.”

  12. “Fate is never unfair to anyone. We are all free to love or hate what we do. When we love, we find the same joy in our daily activity as do those who one day set off in search of their dreams.”

  13. What is success? It is being able to go to bed each night with your soul at peace.”

  14. Anxiety is part of love, and should not be blamed because of that.

  15. “Anxiety was born in the very same moment as mankind. And since we will never be able to master it, we will have to learn to live with it – just as we have learned to live with storms.”

  16. When you are going through difficult times, remember: you might have lost some major battles, but you survived and you’re still here. That is a victory. Show your happiness and celebrate your ability to go forward.”

  17. Love does not need to be understood. It needs only to be shown.”

  18. “Love is an act of Faith.”

Well, that’s it for now, and till my next blog post.
